Ginger Dark ‘n Stormy Cold Remedy Cocktail
Brrrr it’s cold in here, there must be a virus in the atmosphere! Three days into November, and it’s already -1?! Ya godda be kiddin’. Time to put away those fall clothes and unpack your winter coats (we’ve already worn ours once!). We all know that the ominous count down is on before snow hits the ground and our pockets are stuffed with tissues. It’s been three months of cold season and we’re already sick of chicken soup. We prefer soup that we can make in shakers. Some people call it a cocktail…
Say ola to our new series of “Cold Remedy Cocktails”. There’s nothing worse than being sick, but having to say adios to an evening of conversation and drinks? No bueno. These immune boostin’ concoctions have everything you need to clear your throat, ease the tension in your head, or just give you that extra pep when you’re not feelin like a 10.
Scientifically proven (in our official “science lab” (we mean our kitchens)), these cocktails are easy to make, and most importantly, easy to drink! We’ll be providing you booze hounds with a Cold Remedy Cocktail once a month to keep those sniffles to a minimum through the chillier season!
Stay strong, friends. There might not be any holidays to look forward to this month (goodbye Halloween, see you soon Christmas), but that doesn’t mean you have to give into your cold. Got the flu? No big deal! This month’s Cold Remedy Cocktail is here to turn your dark and dreary November into a Dark ‘N’ Stormy one!
Ginger root is a triple threat. Remember capsaicin from our Chocolate Chili Cold Remedy Cocktail? Yeah, gingers got that too. That’s what makes it a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. It reduces the amount of neurotransmitters that shoot pain to the brain. This wonky root has been adored for centuries all over the world for its medicinal magic.
Its secret weapons? Zingerone, shogaol and gingerol. Each one works to get your immune system working in high gear. We can thank zingerone for ginger’s bacteria battling anti-fungal qualities, shogaol for being an antitussive and keeping your cough away, and gingerol for reducing fevers with its anti-pyretic properties. All three combined help with nausea, meaning we’ll be drinking this cocktail in the evening and the morning (come on, the flu can strike at any time!). So empty your medicine cabinet ‘cause obviously all you need is a ginger root! But have you ever tried to eat ginger raw? It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s much better suited in a cocktail with its old drinking buddy, Ginger Beer. Luckily for you and your queasy tummy, the Ginger Dark ‘N’ Stormy Cold Remedy Cocktail exists.
fills two tumblers for you and your sick day buddy!
2 oz Rum (we used Kraken Black Spiced Rum because of course we did)
25 g Fresh Ginger
6 oz Ginger Beer (we used Melville’s delicious Ginger Beer. Definitely worth a trip to the LCBO. Just go in your PJs, we won’t tell)
1 cup Sugar
1 cup Water
Ice for shaking and garnish
1 Cocktail Shaker
First let’s make a potent ginger simple syrup. Chop and peel the ginger, then combine with the sugar and water in a pot and let simmer for 20 minutes.
The longer the simmer time, the more infused the ginger becomes – super important for making you feel better! Strain the simple syrup and set aside.
In a shaker, pour in 2 ounces of the simple syrup, 2 ounces of rum, and squeeze the juice of one full lime.
Top with ice and shake for about a minute.
Place a large ice cube in each tumbler and pour in half of the mixture.
Top with 3 ounces of ginger beer, then repeat the same in another glass for a sick buddy. Garnish the glasses with a slice of ginger and let the ginger do its magic.
