5 Fancy Gadgets That Are Changing Our World
This post is part of an ongoing series called “These Are a Few of Our Favourite (20) Things” which features inspirations from the LCBO’s Autumn Food & Drink magazine.
“5 Things That Changed the Way We Drink/Eat” took us on a journey through the last 20 years of drinks and food cultivation. It’s exciting to see how many things have evolved, but what’s more interesting is to recognize the tools that shook the industry so hard that they are still incorporated into every kitchen today.
We may not all be master chefs, but every person has those gadgets that changed the way they function in the kitchen. We like to call these tools our “Fancy Gadgets”. Tools that made food or drink preparation easier, more exciting or more extravagant! Tag along with us as we pay homage to our favourite Fancy Gadgets.
Mini Cotton Candy Machine
This is, without a doubt, our favourite fancy gadget. Sold for only $39.99 at Walmart, We’re not sure why we don’t own ten! Not only can you use ANY hard candy of your choice (think cinnamon heart cotton candy), but you are able to recreate the nostalgic magic of your childhood (seen here) right in your very own kitchen! As an adult you grow up to think a little outside the box: “how can I use cotton candy with booze?” The good news is that cotton candy infused cocktails have become a craze among foodies looking to let their adult side and inner child hold hands. Here are a couple of awesome recipes worthy of making the purchase if you haven’t done so already:
OR Swirl it around a stick and use it to garnish a glass like this Pinterest pinner did.
Mini Pie Maker
One word can be used to describe this appliance: adorbs. Imagine serving up an personal sized pie to each one of your guests. “Wow, how thoughtful”, they’ll say. “You’re so attentive to my desire not to share”, they’ll croon. You’ll be the talk of the town, especially if you can manage to get them a little tipsy in the process. Any pie can be turned into a mini pie with this $99.99 Pie Maker from Breville. After you’re done marveling in its glory, see below for great boozy pie recipes!
Don’t forget the Hard Cider Apple Pie from us, School House Booze 😉
NOTHING says “I’m a culinary genius” like a blowtorch. Perhaps it’s a primal attraction to fire, perhaps it’s the satisfying sound of gas igniting, who knows! One thing remains certain – fire is sexy. This $30.00 refillable, butane powered fancy gadget has a million uses outside of the liqueur cupboard that you’ve probably seen before (watch any episode of Iron Chef), but let us remind your that booze is flammable and therefore all combinations of alcohol and blowtorches will be amazing…and also dangerous. Approach these recipes with caution, you might blow your friend’s minds 😉
And just for fun, here’s a list that can tell you how to ignite any alcohol. You’re welcome.
As much as we like to think of ourselves as modern day Martha Stewarts (minus the incarceration), let’s face it, times in the kitchen can sometimes lead to frustration and, more often than we’d like to admit, even some tears. One thing that is usually more agitating then it’s worth is icing things. This sucks because there’s nothing lovelier than a well decorated baked good. Mechanical Piper to the rescue! Sitting at just $1.00 from Dollarama, this wonder machine comes with a series of interchangeable nozzles. Just plop in the icing, push the trigger and viola – bonjour, mon nom est Julia Child! Looking to unleash your inner artisan too? Pick yourself up one of these as you try out some of the alcoholic icing recipes below!
Need a more adventurous recipe? Yummly has everything from Bourbon Buttercream to Creme de Menthe! Oh la la!
Lastly, the pride and joy of the School House Booze kitchen: A Teal Stand Mixer. If you already have a stand mixer, you know what a game changer it is. These babies aren’t cheap but $400 worth of Kitchenaid magic goes a long way. It’s a stunning counter top feature as well as the ultimate fancy multi-tool. Long gone are the days of mixing/whisking/folding/kneading by hand. Things are done in the half the time with half the effort. The food and drink world is your oyster with one of these and slowly more recipe books and sites are writing it in as a necessity. Here are some tricky tipsy recipes made simple by the wonder of the stand mixer:
Bonus Round: We’re in love with this round up of 5 alcoholic whipped cream recipes where a stand mixer is a must!
